| The Head First Foundation was incorporated in 1990 by its founder Doug Walker. Operating as a registered 501c(3) nonprofit corporation for more than a decade, the Head First Foundation boasts a record for helmet wearing compliance that is unequaled. Mr. Bob Costas of NBC Sports heads the list of distinguished board members, serving as the Honorary Chairman.. The mission of the Head First Foundation is to reduce the growing number of serious head injuries among children. The Head First Foundation believes strongly that the cure for head injuries has been discovered -- prevention. The Head First Show is designed to teach children personal responsibility by emphasizing simple ways to prevent head injuries. Head injuries are the leading cause of death and permanent disability among children and are also the most preventable. Doug Walker has been working in the world of traumatic brain injury for over twenty years. He was involved in an accident in 1981 with two of his friends. Both friends were severely brain injured and permanently disabled. In 1988 Doug focused the Nation's attention on the needs of survivors of serious head injuries by running across the United States from San Francisco to Boston. He has been honored numerous times for his groundbreaking work in teaching children personal responsibility. Doug has been touring North America performing the Head First Show since 1990. To date he has impacted the lives of over 3 million children. He is part comedian and part motivational speaker. Teachers are continually amazed with his ability to keep the attention of children age 5-12 for an hour. HIP-"D" (head injury prevention dog) is Doug's newest partner and has been stealing the show for three years! The Head First Show is interactive and high energy. It changes kids attitudes about wearing helmets by making it cool. Other topics covered include buckling seat belts and tying shoelaces to avoid accidental falls. The concept of working as a Team to help others prevent injuries has been the cornerstone of the Head First message. Over 500,000 children have joined the Head First Team along with superstars like Ozzie Smith, John Elway, and Wayne Gretzky.
